This article begins with an introduction to paravirtualization and emulated devices, and then explores the details of virtio. The focus is on the virtio framework from the 2. Linux is the hypervisor playground. As my article on Linux as a hypervisor showed, Linux offers a variety of hypervisor solutions with different attributes and advantages. Having these different hypervisor solutions on Linux can tax the operating system based on their independent needs. One of the taxes is virtualization of devices.
Rather than have a variety of device emulation mechanisms for network, block, and other driversvirtio provides a common front end for these device emulations to standardize the interface and increase the reuse of code across the platforms.
In full virtualizationthe guest operating system runs on top of a hypervisor that sits on the bare metal. The guest is unaware that it is being virtualized and requires no changes to work in this configuration. Conversely, in paravirtualizationthe guest operating system is not only aware that it is running on a hypervisor but includes code to make guest-to-hypervisor transitions more efficient see Figure 1. In the full virtualization scheme, the hypervisor must emulate device hardware, which is emulating at the lowest level of the conversation for example, to a network driver.
In the paravirtualization scheme, the guest and the hypervisor can work cooperatively to make this emulation efficient. Hardware continues to change with virtualization. New processors incorporate advanced instructions to make guest operating systems and hypervisor transitions more efficient. Xen provides paravirtualized device drivers, and VMware provides what are called Guest Tools. But in traditional full virtualization environments, the hypervisor must trap these requests, and then emulate the behaviors of real hardware.
Although doing so provides the greatest flexibility namely, running an unmodified operating systemit does introduce inefficiency see the left side of Figure 1. The right side of Figure 1 shows the paravirtualization case. The hypervisor implements the back-end drivers for the particular device emulation. These front-end and back-end drivers are where virtio comes in, providing a standardized interface for the development of emulated device access to propagate code reuse and increase efficiency.
From the previous section, you can see that virtio is an abstraction for a set of common emulated devices in a paravirtualized hypervisor.
This design allows the hypervisor to export a common set of emulated devices and make them available through a common application programming interface API.
Figure 2 illustrates why this is important. With paravirtualized hypervisors, the guests implement a common set of interfaces, with the particular device emulation behind a set of back-end drivers.
The back-end drivers need not be common as long as they implement the required behaviors of the front end. QEMU is a system emulator that, in addition to providing a guest operating system virtualization platform, provides emulation of an entire system PCI host controller, disk, network, video hardware, USB controller, and other hardware elements.
The virtio API relies on a simple buffer abstraction to encapsulate the command and data needs of the guest. In addition to the front-end drivers implemented in the guest operating system and the back-end drivers implemented in the hypervisorvirtio defines two layers to support guest-to-hypervisor communication.
At the top level called virtio is the virtual queue interface that conceptually attaches front-end drivers to back-end drivers. Drivers can use zero or more queues, depending on their need. For example, the virtio network driver uses two virtual queues one for receive and one for transmitwhere the virtio block driver uses only one.
Virtual queues, being virtual, are actually implemented as rings to traverse the guest-to-hypervisor transition. But this could be implemented any way, as long as both the guest and hypervisor implement it in the same way. As shown in Figure 3five front-end drivers are listed for block devices such as disksnetwork devices, PCI emulation, a balloon driver for dynamically managing guest memory usageand a console driver. Each front-end driver has a corresponding back-end driver in the hypervisor.

Accessing devices through VirtIO on a guest VM improves performance over more traditional "emulated" devices, as VirtIO devices require only the bare minimum setup and configuration needed to send and receive data, while the host machine handles the majority of the setup and maintenance of the actual physical hardware.
The currently defined types are:. All devices have a common "header" block of registers:. The Device Features register is pre-configured by the device, and includes flags to notify the guest VM what features are supported by the device. This allows both the host and the guest to maintain both backward and forward compatibility. The flags in this register designate when the driver has found the device, when the driver has determined that the device is supported, and when the all of the necessary registers have been configured by the guest driver, and communication between the guest and host may begin.

These buffers are added to virtual queues in memory, and each device has a predefined number of queues. For instance, the VirtIO Network device has 2 mandatory queues the receive queue and the send queueand one optional queue the control queue. The optional control queue must be supported by both the host and guest i. Each queue must be configured by the guest operating system before the device can be enabled.
The guest can determine the necessary memory needed by the queue by setting the Queue Select register to the desired queue index, and then reading the Queue Size register. Once the virtual queue has been created in memory, its address is written to the Queue Address register.
This value written to this register is the address of the queue divided bywhich means that the virtual queue must be aligned on a byte boundary.
To send data to a VirtIO device, the guest fills a buffer in memory, and adds that buffer to the Buffers array in the Virtual Queue descriptor. Then, the index of the buffer is written to the next available position in the Available ring buffer, and the Available index field is incremented.
Once the buffer has been processed, the device will add the buffer index to the Used ring, and will increment the Used index field. When the buffer has been filled, the device will write the buffer index to the Used ring and increment the Used index. Apr 23, 44 13 Multi Monitor mode had to be enabled in my bios otherwise the card wasn't detected at all even by the host using lspci. As of PVE 5, I had to also disable efifb. Confirm using lspci -v - this will tell you if a driver has been loaded or not by the VGA adaptor. Find the relevant VGA card entry. For example: Using this number run lspci -n -s This will give you the vendor ids. You may will need to provide VirtIO drivers during install. Remote desktop will be handy if you don't have a monitor connected or keyboard passed through.
You can verify the passthrough by starting the VM and entering info pci into the respective VM monitor tab in the Proxmox webui. This should list the VGA and audio device, with an id of hostpci0. Windows should automatically install a driver. You can allow this and confirm in device manager that the card is loaded correctly ie without any "code 43" errors.

Asymmetric Multi-Processing AMP software architectures provide software developers an effective way to leverage the heterogeneous compute infrastructure present in SoCs today. AMP system architectures can be classified into supervised and unsupervised architectures. Supervised asymmetric multiprocessing sAMP software architecture is applicable to applications that require isolation of software contexts and virtualization of system resources present in the system.
In sAMP architecture, the participating guest operating systems run in guest virtual machines that are managed and scheduled by a hypervisor aka virtual machine monitor. The hypervisor provides isolation and virtualization services for the virtual machines. In systems such as this, in order to enable virtualization of IO devices, guest access to virtual IO devices may have to be trapped and emulated by the hypervisor as shown in Figure a, where the hypervisor owns the device and the associated device driver or forwarded to another guest that owns a device driver for the device as shown in Figure b.
To realize either of these device virtualization models, shared memory based communication between guest OS device drivers and host hypervisor is essential. VirtIO provides a standardized transport abstraction that enables guest front-end drivers to communicate with the host back-end driver over shared memory.
VirtIO provides two key abstractions to user-drivers; 1. The virtqueue abstraction is backed by a circular-buffer called the vring. To transmit data, the transmitter posts references to buffers allocated from shared-memory to the virtqueue, and notifies the receiver for consumption of data posted, and vice-versa for transmissions from receiver.
The virtqueue is unidirectional, a virtio-device may have one or more virtqueues based on communication needs. Figure c shows common guest middleware stacks calling into VirtIO front-end drivers to communicate device access requests to the back-end emulation logic in the hypervisor Vs calling into platform specific device drivers, as in non-virtualized environments that run natively on hardware. Un-supervised AMP uAMP architecture is applicable to applications that do not require strong separation between the participating software contexts.
In this architecture, the participating operating systems run natively on processing cores, co-operatively using resources devices and memory present in the system. In systems such as this, technologies like Mentor Embedded Multicore Framework MEMF provide the infrastructure needed for a master software on a master processing core to bring up any supported remote software contexts on other cores, and communicate with them to offload work.
For these types of systems, VirtIO provides the shared memory based transport needed for communications between the participating software contexts. Figure d below shows a master SW context communicating with a remote context using rpmsg over VirtIO transport later. As shown, the rpmsg driver instantiates an rpmsg-virtio device and associates virtqueues with it.
To transmit data to remote — the master posts buffers allocated from shared-memory to the virtqueue and notifies the remote, and vice-versa for remote to master communications. The TX and RX virtqueues are located in shared-memory. VirtIO provides a simple, powerful, and flexible transport layer for shared memory based communications in AMP systems.
